Kind of alluded to elsewhere but make sure you follow directions in the specific instructions listed for the role, such as whether you need to respond to selection criteria or just provide a statement, and importantly following the stated page limits.

Some panels will be more harsh on not following the instructions than others, but generally it comes across as: 1) Not paying attention to detail (this is also a judgement passed for poor spelling, grammar and formatting particularly if writing is part of the job) 2) Not able to follow instructions in general or 3) Not respecting the time of the panel, they can get heaps of applications and 1 or 2 page limit would be set for a reason so writing a 4 pager will go against you.
