The House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that prevents states from requiring GMO labeling on food. How do biologists feel about this?

I think the government or some other agency should focus on educating people about GMOs and vaccines. Forcing them on to GMOs or vaccines would just further support the anti whatever movement. I only use vaccines as an example because vaccines and GMOs seem to have the most anti supporters compared to other issues or subjects.

Force is never the way to go. Of course parents who don't vaccinate their kids may be harming them in the future but we can't take that right away from them. Parents make stupid decisions all the time. Some of those decisions can affect society more then simply not vaccinating them. Should we create laws that force parents to raise their kids a certain way, in the name of a better society? Do the ends justice the means? It just really seems like the government is becoming more a nanny than an actual government. This is the concerns I have when we mandate anything.

Like I said, when is it okay to force someone to do something and when is it not? Where's the line? Who gets to decide where that line is? Should one person make the decision of millions? Once you ban labeling for GMOs or make vaccines mandatory for everyone, its paving the way to make other things mandated.

I know it seems very obvious that we don't want members of society to make stupid decisions but that just has to happen. Do we want a race of empowered humans ready to tackle any challenge or do we want a race of humans who just do what their told because someone else says its in their best interest?

Small issues like this lead to bigger problems later on down the road. Allowing authority figures to make decisions that individuals should be making will not solve any problems in the future. It'll just mean that those authority figures and anyone who comes after them will be responsible for make decisions for the human race.

You have to look further down the road. What's fair for everyone? Because if something isn't fair to someone else but is fair to you, don't think for a moment that something unfair couldn't happen to you.

What if science finds out that there is no afterlife. Should we ban religion because our officials know what happens next? So religion is invalid and will only hurt society?

Do you see where I'm getting at? Its not about people making stupid choices. Its about our officials thinking they can make our decisions for us. That's what I'm concerned about. I fear that more than I fear catching a disease from an unvaccinated person. I fear that more than whether I may be eating a GMO or not.
