What are native, non-native, and invasive species? What is a tree ?

This video is an excerpt from a live tutorial section with ecology students at the University of Toronto. From this video, you will gain some clarity on the characterization of commonly misused terms in Plant Science, Botany, Ecology, and Forestry.

I first discuss the nuance and ambiguity between how botanists classify: native, non-native, invasive and naturalized species of plants. Secondly, the woes of woody plants that aren't trees (technically) but comprise fibers and grow horizontally are detailed. In particular, I outline the distinctions on how disciplines are non-commensurate.

Finally, to complete the riddles, I use the example of Cannabis sativa, "marijuana", which is a species that is woody but masquerades as a herbaceous plant. Now that's in the weeds.
