That does sound like a shit situation with your shared utility bill and pricing.. and yeah the shower example was more for me a personal reflection about how OK I am with using energy. I think you should take a long shower if it makes you feel good, that’s a pretty low cost way to feel good so hell yeah.

The comment I made wasn’t about social guilt, but environmental damage. If I use more resources than I need I am not helping the problem we are facing with damaging the environment. That energy to heat the water came from some form of energy production. clean energy is possible but commonly energy production damages the environment.

One example I’m personally struggling with is wanting to build a new computer but the power usage is higher these days and I think more about the component cost of producing these types of goods. As a consumer I have a role in the environment I live in, though while I think about this some ship is burning d5 fuel anyways
