How do you do your research??

I use Notion to organize everything for the record. These are my steps for my first long fic:

  1. Skim through tumblr prompts or write what I know.
  2. write a base plot with the character's names
    1. Rewrite the plot with more details.
  3. Start profiling.
    1. character profiles: Even though it's a fandom, it helps that I rewrite their personalities to get a better grasp on them. I am redoing their whole biography up till the starting point. I also try to figure out their internal and external conflicts.
      1. I split these up by Protag, secondary and antag.
      2. I also add a lot of photos, kind of like a mood board for each character.
    2. Setting: All my cities look a bit different through cultural influences so I pull a lot of photos from the internet and research architectural terms. Even if it's not going to get that described in my story, it helps me imagine the area more. I'll create subpages for landmarks and taverns or bars.
    3. Landscape: There are different regions in my world so everywhere as different flora and fawna. I make a list of what people can utilize and how every city has its own flavor.
    4. Map: I pulled a random blank DnD map and scribbled on it.
  4. Outlining:
    1. This part is tricky. So I plan very linearly in the beginning by what I want in each 'chapters'. I use the toggle feature in Notion to organize and usually, each chapter outline is like 400+ words.
      1. At one point I was writing out just 1 sentence on a separte sheet I called 'ARCs' and then expanding it on the outline, but I forgo that style since I have multiple storylines now.
      2. Instead of going by 'chapters', each labeled by the Day (day 1, day 2) so I can keep track of what happens when for each storyline.
  5. Motivation fan art.
    1. Sometimes I need a break so I start grabbing awesome fan art so I gawk over.

I do jump around between 3 and 4 a lot while outlining by adding in more info or notes. Most canon and OC characters/settings aren't fleshed out and I go back to it after I progress in my outline.

I typically write one-shots, so I skip 3 entirely. I just do 1-2 and 4.
