How do you explain the value of martial arts to your friends and family?

This is kinda interesting, I was thinking about what my time spend doing MT has kind of tough me about myself just the other day.

I guess MA is different to everyone but somethings that I feel I've taken away from it are:

Persistence: I know we always say work hard and you'll see the rewards in life, well for me MT really emphasized this. I remember my first 4 or so months where I decided to try and step up my training a bit, training and sparring with very accomplished fighters. And well it sucked, I was getting wrecked, dumped, my technique was constantly getting ripped apart by the coach. I basically had to learn again from the ground up. The coach doesn't say much in terms of encouragement, very stoic man i guess. But after about 6 months he says to me "Your kicks, they're not so shitty anymore." Let me tell you those simple words lifted my spirits like very few things have.

What loving something means: seems strange doesn't it. Everyone always says you gotta find something you love but what does that really mean? Well, when your all banged up and bruised and you still find yourself going back to the gym the next day that's telling you something. When your doing your road work when literally a year ago I didn't even own a pair of running shoes, you could be doing something that you really care about. There's easier ways to get in shape that don't leave me feeling like a truck hit me some days. I do MT, at least for the time being, because I love it.

Courage: I think the quote goes "courage is not the absence of fear, but accepting it and moving forward regardless" Doesn't matter what everyone says, when I face someone I'm scared. The guy's probably been training for a few months specifically to fuck my ass up, that's a scary thought. But here you are, standing across the guy and its go time. Sometime in life you gotta do some scary shit, but then I say to myself "fuck it, its go time"
