Married Man here. You are absolutely right. There is no need to quit your job ever. Like you said, if anything happens you and be left with sympathy and nothing. But there is one more reason which is beyond this hypothetical situation. It's financial independence. It's very important that you keep your financial independence, because it gives you a voice. If you lose this, you will have to depend on your husband for money. That means in every small situation, his opinion will matter. You will become voice less. You know how it works in South india. Even to see your parents, you would need his permission.

Tell him that there is maternity leave for initial stages. Ask him to contribute equally in child care. There are thousands of women who go to work and take care of kids. You can do it as well.
