How to quit football/soccer fandom?

You sound like me falling out of love with my old favorite TV show, Supernatural. I watched it every week for YEARS even though I thought that most of what they did in the later seasons was unbelievably stupid. I was so invested in the show that it was causing me actual distress to watch it and see all the new and horrible ways they'd decided to ruin the story and characters I had come to deeply care about.

Eventually I realized: I cared more about this show than the people who were involved in making it. It was never going to be what I wanted it to be, and it wasn't as if I could just drive up to Vancouver and start forcibly rewriting scripts. I decided to just quit watching it, and it felt like cutting off a gangrenous limb.

When you're deeply invested in characters or a team that you've been watching for years, it can feel like you owe it to them to keep watching. But you don't owe loyalty to your team just because you've been watching them forever. Fandom is supposed to be for fun, and if it's no longer serving you, it's probably time to let go.

Try just doing something else when a game is on, then ask yourself if you feel better.
