If each album was a person, what would they be like?

Just a disclaimer, all these albums will end up being one guy or a few at various stages of life just because I think their discography works well that way and think their albums "gender-wise" connect more to men than women. Obviously nothing at ALL against women or personifying albums as that but y'know, just how their work feels to me.

Pablo Honey is a good reflection of Thom and his whole grungy sort of thing back then. The personification would be pretty cut and dry with a nice sense of sprouting wit and sardonic humour. He's the guy who's pretty well going through a phase who'll look back on this time and kind of laugh but with no regrets except maybe the aesthetic aspects like his hair, some clothing choices, etc. Angsty but it's a slightly more naive angst than The Bends

The Bends would be the guy who's off in university who still struggles internally (as we all do) but is a bit more mature. Still has some powerful youthful energy that's channelled in a more... gah, "cohesive" manner (less wild and chaotic) while also able to really look inside and reflect on himself and his relationships and whatnot without any pretence of giving off an angsty persona necessarily.

OK Computer is the guy (perhaps the prior guy in his mid-20s) who has kind of had time to see the world change before his eyes and all sorts of technology develop. And with that, he almost has/begins to nicely develop this absurdist sense of observation for a lot of the nuttiness around him. But he still has a good amount of anxious energy, not a young and unwavering one that needs to externalize itself but one that has dug itself into his heart. His fear for a life of complacency, meaninglessness, social alienation, not being able to keep up with the world, incessant internal struggles, etc. This album is the combination of newer, more "mature" fears and the remnants of anger and a younger emotional fragility.

Kid A is pretty well someone who has reached their mental breaking point, who feels like they've lost it and is prone to giving in to suicidal thoughts at any moment. The guy is just ripe with a fear and paranoia he didn't know he could experience again at this magnitude. The world is changing, everything seems odd and chaotic. The man laughs a crazy laugh that he doesn't know is weird but he can't help it because he's basically losing it and who knows, perhaps he is moving slowly towards trying to find solace within himself because the outside world seems so messed up. Maybe he's picking up meditation and techniques to calm himself amidst all the chaos (HTDC and Treefingers)

Amnesiac I actually have a harder time with. Maybe it's someone who's just really alienated and so fragile inside that he basically comes to terms with it and he has become oblivious to it all (amnesia??) Instead, he begins shifting towards politics slightly, he begins looking at the world and big business and all the evils that he had so abhorred in days long gone (Pablo Honey?) He begins reading the news a lot more and grows slowly, slooowly madder at the world and how corrupted it seems. Which leads us to...

Hail To The Thief. Pretty cut and dry again, this time the guy has HAD it with the political landscape of his country/the world. Lots of pointless bromide, empty talk, false promises, acts of corruption and immorality and innocents being killed, etc. Not only politics but socially speaking he's become sick of the facade of grand idolization that societies are modelled after. A very flash-in-the-pan, Hollywood and consumerist type society.

In Rainbows is the guy who experiences something drastic and he feels as if all is revealed (in rainbows). He is matured, his anger is less directed towards things that he feels are ultimately futile because time is running out for us anyway. He has become more introspective, more fearful of death in the way that people in their 30s start to become. He worries about it a lot and he doesn't necessarily show it but there is a certain look in his eyes in little moments of silence where you can catch a glimpse of some regret, or some desire, or some untimely demise of pain and having to leave the world behind. That being said, he's probably the 2nd coolest bloke to hang with just because he is so much more calm and collected but still very understandably sensitive and introspective. All around cool though internally rather weary guy.

The King Of Limbs is the revitalization of that person whenever they feel older or like life just isn't quite what it used to be. it's just that mad energy that's drastically different from the fright of his 20s and adolescence but a more fun and upbeat energy that is in tune with who he really is and the people around him. The guy parties from time to time, knows a good spot to hang with friends on a Friday night, and is able to enjoy life in the little bursts of incredible energy that it is released in. His thoughts from the In Rainbows era is still definitely there and obviously death is still on his mind but he's a little more content with the idea and wants to revel in some simple pleasures before he goes. For me, probably the coolest person to hang with and talk to. He gets it, he gets it all.
