The thing is (coming from an Australian), the NATO target for funding by GDP is 2%, only like 5 countries in NATO meet or exceed that, with over 20 falling short by varying amounts. Now, given the US's GDP is so much higher, this increased percentage ends up accounting for like 70% of NATO spending.

And that is simply not true. The 2% of GDP is not NATO funding and as far as I'm aware all countries are up to date with their NATO contributions. The 2% is a guideline (!) agreed between NATO countries as how much they should spend on defence.

As a matter of fact, if you go to cost share arrangements per capita with regards to direct funding of NATO the US is putting in less than Germany, France and the UK
