If you have the power to create a new basic human right, what would it be?

Thanks for the reply! Yeah it's a big jump. It would not be possible, nor would it be desirable, to delete illegal information laws overnight. Probably the best thing would be to trial it in a smaller country with weak IP laws to begin with. But they would immediately be excluded from international trade and benefits. It would be like living in a tax haven, except it's an information haven.

I like the irrevocable licence idea, because as a public-funded researcher myself, i know that anything I invent is going to ultimately belong to the institute in which i work, because i used their shitty centrifuges and/or computers to do it. Even if i actually thought of the idea outside of work, did the majority of the R&D on my home computer, etc.

The only thing i'd say is don't forget that laws that can not be enforced will undermine the entire system. Thats what many people say about cannabis smoking at home, or laws against female abortion. You physically cannot stop someone, so such laws only affect the unlucky or stupid, which is unfair.

Many of these illegal information laws are not only difficult to enforce, but sometimes difficult to know if the crime has even been committed. Consider insider trading for example. Who knows if they sold their stock, or told someone else to sell their stock. With anonymity on the internet you have a similar situation. My browser fingerprint is more unique than my full legal name, but the former is considered non-personal in many countries, while the latter may be illegal to change in others (Germany doesn't like people changing names for example, where in the UK it's a €50 form you send off).

So while you or I could easily think of an ideal system that if it just worked this way everything would be chill - i.e. no transfer of IP from the original creator - the devil with information law is always in the detail. Like copy-protection of movies, it's a losing battle in practice. And makes criminals out of people for reading, writing, or acting upon, information they come across during their limited time on this planet.
