"I'm not Proud to be Gay" - Mardi Gras 2015

He's not proud because he's never done anything to earn that pride.

It is 1973, we are having a party near the U of M campus and 3 strange men come in walk around wide-eyed at the drag queens, leather men and the punch bowl labeled "electric". They leave, we party on.

2 hours later they show up with some more of their drunk friends and stand at the base of the porch calling us faggots, cocksuckers, the usual uncreative names they used. The gays are standing at the top of the porch stairs using the sissy slap to protect themselves from the frat boy punches. Someone gets pushed through the front door glass and we still didn't "fight" back.

Up the street comes Sheila Dilihunt, one of our family of choice, a straight nursing student with a huge heart. She sees what is going on and starts yelling,"STOP, stop hurting my friends!!" One of the frat boys looks over at her and yells, "Shut the FUCK up Nigger!"

In a millisecond the gay crowd changes from defensive to offensive. Even the drunk frat boys noticed the change and started to back off. The glitter slaps turn into actual punches and they start to run. We chase them to their van and are rocking it back and forth. On this day, I was proud to be gay.

If you want to be proud of being gay, DO SOMETHING besides hang out at gay bars, use gay apps, criticize other gay people. The Koch Brothers are about to spend $899.000.000.00 to buy the next election. WE could counter that by convincing every queer in the country to register and VOTE. These are our enemies, fight back.

Across the country the Koch Brothers through their ALEC foundation are introducing anti-gay legislation painted in the hues of religious freedom. Gay marriage may get passed but we still won't be free. The struggle for gay rights isn't over but most gay people seem to think the 4th quarter ended and we are going to win on a technicality. As long as you're comfortable thinking that, they win.
