Immigrants of AskAnAmerican, what is your coming to America story?

Typical "not a blahh but blahh" post

But

Not an immigrant but my parents are. My dad grew up in some shit village in India. No running water, nothing. Parents died when he was young so he pretty much supported his whole family. He traveled the world working and eventually came to the US. Small things that we take for granted, like hot water, functioning police, the fact that you can make an honest living and own a house for example or apply for a permit to build a fence... these things amaze my dad.

I love my dad but he is an ass and he will never be my friend. But if there is one thing he instilled in me, it was gratitude for being an American.

I will never take it for granted.
