iRating 388 - do I need to go back to MX5?

You're unfortunately going to have to do something very boring, and that's picking a vehicle and practicing. If you can't manage more than a few laps without crashing, there's some fundamental skills you need to strengthen so that you can comfortably race the car.

Jumping into races at this point is not making you get any better.

I generally haven’t been too concerned with iR but I wanted to join a couple leagues and they have iR minimums that I am way below

If you're going to be racing in leagues, you have an obligation to be able to keep the car on track. People devote their free time to leagues and it's typically a one and done deal - if you ruin the races for people here, you're going to have a bad time. No one will want to invite you in future.

Please practice. Pick a vehicle - any vehicle - and stick with it for a time. Learn to drive it. Race against AI if you have to. Once you can do typical race distance without crashing - so anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes - that's when you're ready to practice racecraft.
