Isitbullshit: If you go to school or work in some Asian country as a white American, you'll instantly become popular there

Pretty true imo.

White westerners are definitely more respected than non white ones. While working in Singapore, it was stereotyped or stated plainly that Singaporeans “work” harder because they are ASIAN asian and not Asian American.

But my coworkers never talked poorly or even challenged my white American counterpart. Even tho we were at the same managerial position. I think the popularity has to do racism (yes ppl are very racist) and systemic classist respect for their old colonizers (they were under British rule).

It’s just something I understood and didn’t really bring up...just the way the culture be ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That’s my experience working abroad for two years.
