Seems like people are missing the point. You know the McLuhan medium = message thing? I'm not saying it's the exact same thing but people picking out sentences and debating minutia are missing that this is not meant to be a perfect argument for anything other than the concept that honest discussion on an interpersonal level can be challenging but we might turn out to be human and show one another our humanity. The discussion being brash, honest, and ultimately productive, and represented by people near the edges of those ideologies, that's the message here, that's what the artist is arguing in favor of, not necessarily the lyrics at face value. The artist asks us to see the forest for the trees and he wonders; why, if individuals from the edges can reconcile, can't a society?
