[Jung] Jeremy Lin on Being the Only Asian Player in the NBA: 'At Times it Kinda Sucks'

and you might as well say we all are Asians, which honestly, I can jive with. Either we're all Asians or we're all different.

The problem is that, this logic doesn't work in our society's construct of "race". The reason that Asians aren't grouped all together is because, like you said, we all look completely different from region to region. The reason why the racial categories were created was to separate us from people who originated from Europe and Africa (and apply affirmative action to "force" diversity into schools or workplaces lol).

The current system is pretty bad when it groups asians because we're so diverse. It's not like Europe or Africa, where the majority looks to be either white or black.

Keep in mind, the idea of "asian-american" is still a rather new concept in the US. Only 5.5% of the population is asian, so the government grouped together Chinese and Indians as a convenience thing because we come from similar immigrant backgrounds and we enter similar job fields in the US. Over time, it should separate and split off more, and maybe groups like Afghanistan and Pakistan will be grouped with India.
