To play Devil’s advocate, Burke staying in his room may have been because he heard his mom yelling, and if there had been incidents in the past with his mom or dad or both, he might’ve been too afraid to go downstairs.

Although, if one takes the enhanced 911 audio as fact, then Burke did in fact go downstairs at some point. So who knows, really?
