Justin Trudeau: Tories threaten liberty by fostering prejudice against Muslims

There have been several high profile cases concerning Islam and gender equality over the last two years. One example would be allowing fathers to participate in swimming lessons with there daughters, a few others dealt with Muslim men refusing to acknowledge women in a few different contexts.

Muslims are free to behave the way they want as long as they are not breaking any laws. If a Muslim family wants to enroll their daughter in a swimming class which is not open to be observed by men, that is perfectly legal. The problem with that particular case is not that the Muslims wanted a non-observed class but that the father was not informed that he would not be allowed to observe the class. Muslims have just as much of a right to demand services from the market as we do. If we can demand swimming classes where we can watch our daughters, they can demand non-observed swimming classes. It now becomes a question of supply and demand. There is no religious issue here, but props on trying to make one out of nothing.

Your distinction between religion being absolute and culture not being absolute is completely arbitrary. I know Muslims that eat bacon. Eating bacon is not a crime. Committing an honour killing is a crime. We can accept legal things and we can refuse to accept illegal things. It has nothing to do with religion. There is no law that says you can commit an honour killing if you are a Muslim. All people are held to the same legal standard regardless of their religious/cultural beliefs. However, all religious/cultural beliefs cannot be held to the same standard because they are arbitrary concepts that cannot commit harms. People commit harms. People commit honour killings, people commit genital mutilations, people commit sharia law justice or whatever you're talking about. Religion does not commit these things. *By committing to upholding freedom of religion, we ensure that people are held responsible for their actions, because we are no longer able to point the finger at religion for a crime. This is the point you need to understand. It is something that the people who put together the Charter understood and it is something that is an understanding that is being lost in left-wing politics, a side which increasingly wants to point the finger at arbitrary ideas like "culture" "patriarchy" "rape culture" which harms our ability to point the finger at actual criminals.
