Also, the term they are offended over made me think of an old jazz classic I remembered, the "Darktown Strutter's Ball". It turns out that this song, which was very popular and performed by an incredible number of artists, was written by a black composer in 1917. It was performed by many famous black singers, including Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald, Django Reinhardt, and Fats Domino. Which suggests that darktown was not considered offensive, despite it's similarity to the word in Smith's song. Will this jazz standard be the next thing to get memory-holed, and ripped out of record catalogs and movies?
