Kevin Durant's decision was logical and the correct one.

Just follow me on this one. To the historians, I’m purposefully condensing this for the length of the post, please don’t kill me.

INDUSTRY

If we were to equate a star player to the industrial output of a state, then multiple star players would equate to a large industrial base in a state. In the pre-modern era, the military power of nation-states were largely correlated to their industrial base.

GERMAN EMPIRE, 2 FRONTS, AND TRAINS

The German Empire pre-WW1 is a great example of a large industrial base producing a powerful military. Now remember, the dawn of 20th century saw a change in military logic throughout all the major empires on the European continent. This logic relied on rapid mobilization and movement that therefore produced quick victories. Rapid mobilization and movement was dependent on one thing; railroads. The amount of railroad networks a nation had dictated how fast militaries could move their assets to defense positions and objectives in preparation for war. These networks were largely the reason why the German Empire was able to lay siege and occupy Liege, Belgium in 2 weeks and then move on France as opposed to the crappy and minimal network of the Russian empire which basically collapsed in 1915-16 as the strains of war (moving troops to the front line) became greater. It was imperative that the German Empire used its industrial base to invest heavily in railroads due to the fact that its plan for warfare on the European continent, known as the schlieffen plan, put it on a war footing against both the French Republic and the Russia Empire.

Now, lets say the 2015-2016 Warriors were the German Empire. This would mean that, via their large industrial base/Star players, they were able to accomplish many military goals/nba records. While ambitious, they failed to win the war/title and as a result, a great shame were put on them and their people via the treaty of Versailles, which neutralized them economically for the the better part of a decade, but kept the industrial base intact, though weak, as per terms of the treaty when it came to natural resources.

DURANT AND THE THIRD REICH

Enter Durant, someone looking for an opportunity that encourages his evolution as a man. By contributing his star power/industrial output to the GSW/The Third Reich, he is ensuring that an already powerful team has the output needed to put fear into their adversaries and once again try to conquer Europe/the NBA once again. This output would be needed to build the planes, ships, and trains needed to devastate and occupy Poland and the Lowlands/the west.

In this situation, Cleveland would most likely represent France. After the first world war, the French began to construct the Maginot Line, a defensive fortification that would be utilized to give the French the time it needed to mobilize against a German invasion and face the Reich in neutral Belgium. The Maginot line to France represented the ultimate defense against a rising Germany that was set on domination, unfortunately, the Germans ignored that fortification and went on to occupy western Europe via the low countries. Only time will tell if the Maginot line the Cavs have, currently the second favorites to win the title, will be enough to stop the Third Reich and their ambitions.

TL;DR: Durant joined a pissed off Germany that seeks domination after an embarrassing failure.
