Looking for insight on how relocation/temporary housing costs are covered related to water damage

Any items you have that were damages should be covered under your renter's insurance policy.

For moving to a new place while the repairs are done, it depends on local laws, your lease, and the landlord.

For example, I'd assume the place is no longer habitable. Does your lease or local laws address habitability? In my lease I have it set that if the place loses habitability the lease is voided. So the tenant wouldn't owe me any more rent but the place would also no longer be their home. I wouldn't cover moving costs because moving costs would be something that was incurred anyway when the lease ended. I'd probably assist in any way I could with being flexible on them staying and wouldn't charge them any additional rent if they stayed in the place for a few days after the lease ended.

if the place is habitable I'd ask them to move all items out of the affected areas and discount the rent based on the loss of use for those rooms (so if it affected 1/3 of the house then they would owe 1/3 less rent).
