Marco Arment: The Apple Watch got me hooked on mechanical watches

The traditional watch will never be dead.

I can afford an Apple Watch. I have a MacBook Air, mini, wife has a MacBook Pro, we both have iPhones, and I have had at least a dozen macs in my life.

I also own four watches, which range from acetate to stainless steel to gold. Not one of which has so much as a date or a single number on the face. My watches are chronometers, plain and simple, and I am exceedingly picky about the aesthetics.

I loathe, with intensity, the idea of having an electronic device on my wrist. Many people share this feeling. I can understand this allure, but for me it is positively twitch inducing. Right now, additionally, I think it is ugly and additionally wearing one is still something of a "statement" These things will, of course, pass, as more attractive watches are made and more and more people wear them, to the point it becomes normal.

I am never going to want to read something on my wrist. To me, it signals the same thing as smoking - it is flaunting, publicly, an addictive compulsion that has its hooks in you and for which you spend lots of money for the continued privilege. Hell, I find it rude to wear a watch with a tuxedo - how do you think I feel about someone who wears an iWatch to dinner? It's as impolite as putting your phone on the table.

eWatches will certainly become more popular. But they won't replace watches any more than the sports jersey replaced shirts. Many, many people will buy and wear them every day - and there will be many of us who both neither own them and think it is improper to wear an eWatch in many circumstances, rather like a sports jersey is. Granted, it can be totally appropriate (and even the prime use case) to wear a eWatch to work, while wearing a jersey to work is inappropriate, but they are both inappropriate at a restaurant.
