‘Do mention the war,’ Merkel urges Japanese

Whenever someone argues that Billy could not have stolen from the candy store because James stole from the bakery I imagine they have little to say in Billy's defense, also that there is likely a strong bias, and that facts and truth become have become for them secondary at that point.

When I see mud slinging it sets off alarms. Especially in this case you seem to be suggesting simply that the US and RoK engaged in the same offense of using sex slaves as Japan is widely believed to, so to me this means the idea that Japan may have engaged in organized sexual slavery as alleged only seems more likely as it was apparently a common practice, no? If what you say is true, and I don't doubt it, that would not mean though that Japan would be free from the responsibility of facing the truth and answering for their offenses, only that RoK and the US need to face the same ugly truths and themselves answer for their actions (and the added hypocrisy).

It's a bad look too, when people try to deny the sins of their fathers and grandfathers etc. Especially because the actions of the grandfather should not even reflect back onto the grandson as an individual, however a grandson in denial shows a disregard for the injustice of the crime, it's victim's, and suggest that having a (phony) neat little family tree of perfect specimens who never did any wrong (impossible) is more important than the justice of truth and the understanding and healing that results from things as simple as recognition and examination.

Every single person on this earth is surely descendent of both slaves and tyrants, kings and crooks, beautiful champions and murderous raiders. There are no negative traits or habits that are exclusive or excluded from any family, race, or ethnicity of people and likewise no positive traits only exhibited in one people. We've all been through it all, we all have it all, in fact we're all distant cousins. Individuals either obsessively focusing on or diminishing the actions and accomplishments of their ancestors as if they reflect on themselves is just pointless mental masturbation and things will probably be better when we all can cut out the nonsense.

The Japanese really have so much going for them too, their people, country, and culture are celebrated the world over and admired immensely. It really would not such a big deal for Japanese society to widely accept the existence of comfort women like almost everyone else has, and already a lot of Japanese officials and organizations have recognized the existence, the ones that matter at least from what I understand. So we could have and should have moved on at this point, we haven't yet but the only time the rest of the world outside east Asia ever thinks about it these days is in observing the denialmism. It's like the Streisand effect, and at this point I would not be surprised to learn that myself being 26 years old and having studied history in college would have never even seen or read enough on the subject to retain any knowledge had it not been for the revisionists and denialism. It would have been just another tragedy covered in a quick paragraph in the book of tragedies that is our world history and it would have been forgotten and moved past like the majority of the others in that book, if that is were it not for the people who wanted to remove it from the book and have made it such an issue. To be cruel and heartless for a second: it really wasn't even that bad of an offense on a grand global and historical scale to my own egocentric western eyes that is (things obviously different for Koreans), it doesn't even seem worthy of the hoopla and I imagine a lot of us are surprised with how contentious of an issue this is when it is certainly not the worst thing that people's grandfather's were doing across the globe in the 40's, wouldn't even make the top 100 on the list lol.

I have to wonder if these people know how bad it looks when they deny something that is so widely accepted and simply based on the fact that it may seemingly reflect negatively on their family or culture. Especially when it all begins to rival the initial issue in scope and becomes a controversy of it's own. Then I have to think that they surely have noticed how much negative attention it all draws. Why then I ask myself would they be willing to attract so much controversy if their goal was initially to minimize negative views of their family/culture/society? One logical answer would be because it is the truth, maybe they are simply lovers of truth and justice and they gladly carry the burden of ridicule and scorn knowing their mission is a righteous one to absolve the falsely accused and set the record straight. They must know something I don't or something new has recently came to light to bring significant doubt into the equation or maybe I'm the one brainwashed by propaganda or...nope. Doing any kind of research at all shows how clearly baseless the denialism is, how quickly it is disgarded in academia but only given weight in...where else: the political world, and openly biased the proponents are.

Brother, step into the light. Let the truth was over you and let it clean you of all negative feelings and emotions that were never yours to hold in the first place. Let it free you of what must be quite an internal struggle. Let yourself forget about it just as the rest of us have forgot our grandfather's sins after we've acknowledged their transgressions. I, like millions of others have genocidal sins on both sides of my family. On two different occasions on two different continents my forebears were separately involved in essentially the greatest sin imaginable. I've never struggled with anything beyond simply wishing they both didn't happen, but moving on has been easy because those actions don't represent myself or my family and not my culture either. Those actions were very basic and primal human behaviors, behaviors that all of us have the capacity for as humans and being the creatures that we are. When we think that the capacity for such evil does not exist within ourselves, our bloodlines, or our culture but only existing in "the others" that right there is what invites the evil into our heart and allows it to exist, the idea that we and everything associated with us must be innately good and right and then all the bad and ugly is with those "other peoples" and not something for us. The idea that ugly behavior is something completely separate and distant from ourselves and our families, the idea that says our bloodlines are free from that ugliness also says that others bloodlines must be the tainted ones. Viewing ourselves as superior and our fellow human beings as "others", tainted, ugly, and lesser than ourselves is the very mechanism that allows us to more easily dehumanize these others and treat them with the very evil you argue is so foreign to your family/culture/society.

The same ideals which lead to this denialism are those which we can often find at the base of the initially tragedy: the false ideal of the inherently superior and naturally inferior, of presenting oneself as the standard of decency and "the others" as grimy sub-humans unworthy of any compassion, and majorly troubling for us humans is our tendency to view a sequence of events as a story between right and wrong, good and evil while only ever imagining ourselves as being the protagonist either as an honorable hero or mostly-innocent victim and always free from any serious flaws or fault. Not only does all this allow us to commit evil, all of us and anyone, it allows us to do so in an extreme degree with ease and jubilance while humming a tune and without a thought in the world that hmm, maybe killing real people who are not soldiers by the dozens is not the most decent way to behave? The simple thoughts like just indulging in perceived superiority can with the right circumstance and political atmosphere lead down a dangerous path where after a few years you may find yourself standing looking at a fresh and full mass grave, then a few more charged with a war crime and facing a court made of up these "others" who you could so easily dehumanize before, and then decades on your grandson in the classroom struggling and bothered not with his tests or by bullies or from crushes and girls but instead with emotions dealing with genocide and mass rape that you were associated with and wondering how he fits in with it all.
