Moderately new to climbing but love it and want to improve.

A lot of people talk about which exercises to do to help you improve, get stronger, which book to read, which formula to follow etc.

I hate to be that guy - the one with the intensely philosophical outlook on climbing... but the only formula that will get you anywhere in climbing is a passion for it. The passion is what will drive you to become a better climber, rather than just looking for something that will help you climb the next grade.

The reality is that pretty much anyone who doesn't suffer from some major debilitation can easily climb around V5/6 in a climbing gym by going there at least twice a week and avoiding injury for a handful of years. If this is your goal - to eventually climb whatever grade in the gym... then ignore the rest of this comment.

However, the reality is that to truly become a better climber, you need to build experience and the passion for it. This doesn't' come from the gym, but from going out and experiencing the world of climbing in all it's forms and progressing at those various forms. Some of which... require a whole lot of work.

I'm not the world's best climber by any stretch, but in the past 5 years i've achieved 5.13 (sport, outdoors), 5.11 (trad), 5.10 (alpine), M8 (mixed), WI5+ (ice), climbed a whole bunch of big mountains and a ticked off a whole bunch of other numbers that don't really mean a whole lot... other than to say... that it is the sum of the experiences that I had to achieve those fancy numbers that have made me a climber - not the numbers themselves.

So if you want to just climb harder boulders at your gym... then just climb more boulders and stop worrying about it. If you want to be a better climber... well the answer is above.
