Monster Hunter Generations: 8-4 quality dialogue.

No. I just think there is a fundamental issue here which affects all localization. What approach is being taken?

Some localizers seem to think of themselves not as translators, or even co-creators working together with the original writers, but as those-who-know-best when it comes to the creation of the English language version and who should somehow have control over it--to arbitrarily second-guess, over-ride, or even entirely replace anything the original writers put in the game, stripping out Japanese cultural elements and changing character personalities, to insert Western cultural references and have characters with Westernized ways of talking and thinking, and so on.

Not because it is necessary or better for a Western audience, but because the localizers like the taste better after they have pissed in it.

Knowing the language and culture gap, I'm sure that in many cases they can blow smoke up the arses of the Japanese creators and get away with whatever they please, convincing the Japanese creators that their localization will go down better with the English-speaking target audience, with the Japanese creators not having the language skills to judge just what changes are being made and having to trust that they are even necessary.

Maybe some consumers do prefer a Westernized version that doesn't stretch their brains to think outside of what they are culturally used to in the slightest--others specifically don't want such localization.

If it is done, I just wish it were clearly labelled as "Westernized localization" or something, as opposed to the other approach being labelled, say, "English translation"--which would be an effort to translate the dialogue into English while minimizing any changes away from the essence of the original both in terms of the artistic choices of the original creators and the Japanese cultural elements in the game--something many gamers definitely want.

Doing this would at least let gamers know what they were getting.
