Why was Mugabe never assassinated?

I am not denying the courage and bravery the soldiers, of course. My father fought in this war. I was there as a child and suffered the consequence of defeat. My world completed shattered apart. It changed to the person who I am today. I just wonder what would have happened if there had been a fight at the End as opposed to a truce. What would have been the consequences. Whether Rhodesia had it in her to sustain large casualties? How many deaths would it have taken for Rhodesia to win the final battle. How would it have played out. I remember being totally confused that everybody just gave up fighting. I expect there to be a fight... I wanted there to be a fight!
