The Second Amendment is about maintaining a MILITIA, not giving every Tom, Dick, and Jane a gun. Also, at the time, the national government didn't have a military force. Each state was to maintain it's own state militia for self defense. Should the entire nation go to war, the federal government would have been allowed to command these militia forces as a national army. After the conflict ended, the militias were meant to be returned to their home state and the federal military structure dissolved.

The federal government wasn't originally meant to have a federal military. That was what the Founding Fathers did to prevent the national government from having the ability to use military force against the states.

That is what the Second Amendment was all about. And it didn't count for modern firearms technology.

But I will admit that you are right. By the way the Founding Fathers intended, the federal government shouldn't have a monopoly on violence. But some dingbats along the way decided to build a national army anyway.

If you want to endorse the true meaning of the Second Amendment, dismantle the US military and start forming state militias. Until you're willing to do that, don't bother me again.
