What’s it like staying at a homeless shelter?

I had to watch my friend slowly die as he drowned in his own blood after being stabbed in his lung with a pairing knife by two glue sniffers back in the 80's in a homeless shelter. You fear lice and everything else, you see people who need help just be left to end for themselves as you run from place to place just trying to get fed, find a cash day job, or just any fucking hope. I was homeless for a time in my youth and just a time that never goes away. One of the two glue sniffers was himself a tragic story, I would get into it but not really in the mood, so much tragedy. It is a very, very hard life. I am the only one whom I knew who got out, it fucks with your head in ways I cannot begin to describe.
