My advice to you is to read 1st & 2nd Kings in the Bible. Whether you are Christian or not, I think there's a lot that can speak to you. You'll find that the kings of Israel abandoned God, and would be rebellious. Then one king would come and restore obedience to God. What I think you'll relate with is that after a king would obey God, their son would inherent the throne and turn away from God. (son or grandsons). Point being, even though the father did (most) everything right, the child has a will of their own. Again, since it seems that you feel that you failed somewhere in raising him, I think you would benefit from reading these books.
