I agree, if anything I think his Hoenn team is one of his most balanced which is part of the reason why I like AG. The ace formula they really developed with Infernape has it's place but it was so fun watching everybody in AG heavily shine besides Torkoal who was that season's jobber. Donphan was pretty solid, Corphish was a consistent high level contributor, Glalie was a monster and was the Hoenn league MVP who either won or forced a draw, Swellow is his strongest bird, was legitimately his strongest mon until Grovyle evolved in BF and easily one of his strongest mons that isn't an ace/on the JN team. Sceptile didn't solidify his spot as the strongest on this team until BF and didn't solidify his spot as one of Ash's strongest until he beat Darkrai but the writers not putting him on that level until later is what makes the team not too stacked and let everybody share the shine which IMO is better than an Infernape/Greninja situation where so much of the spotlight is dedicated to one member of the team.
