Do I need a weapon to feel safe on runs?

What are the main things that are actually a safety concern for you? If people are harassing you from within their cars as they drive by, that's awful of course, but does not actually seem like a major safety risk - so something like pepper spray or any other weapon is unlikely to actually help you in any way, if that's what the situation is like. "Defensive" strategies are probably your best option - dressing more "manly", staying aware of your surroundings, not making eye contact with anyone, etc. It seems to make like the biggest safety concern for you actually is the dogs. Can you possibly find a route that doesn't cross paths with any unfenced dogs? Or if there are specific dogs that continue to cause issues, can you try talking to their owners?
