I agree with quite a few of the critiques presented here.

The Rebuilds are overall quite disjoined as a supposedly serialized narrative when watched next to each other, and Shinji's arc in 3.0+1.0 has too much telling and too little showing going on, and many secondary characters were hardly even given any development or something interesting to do.

I mean, the emotional resolution is pretty nice and all, I guess, but the whole thing feels ultimately undercooked as a story. But I honestly don't blame Anno too much; he has made it abundantly clear that he was exhausted with the franchise and wanted to move on, as working with it caused him severe mental distress and even a relapse in his depression, so I can sympathize with him just wanting to get it over with; it was obviously not good for his health.
