It absolutely has been driven by isolationism. The US has zero, absolutely zero interest in the world. It views the world as tourist sites.

But it does understand it has to be a part of the global system in order to support its way of life. It then has intense paranoia around this. This is what drives its interventionism, not "profits". It wants a world order that ensures its way of life is not threatened. Every country would try to do this if they could.

Oh no, killing terrorists, how terrible. But no, I do not applaud violence. I do applaud the US at least trying to lessen its lethality. If Nixon was president during Iraq, he would have leveled half of the country and probably most of Iran for good measure.
