Non-Americans of Reddit, what confuses you the most about America?

Okay so some of them are basically clubs for academic excellence, and that’s awesome. That’s how they started out.

But the rest are essentially just social clubs with higher fees and extra steps.

Problem is they generate sooo much income for some colleges that they’re hard to divest from. Plus traditions tend to die hard at old institutions. And then there’s FOMO from kids who grew up outside of a large, lucrative social circle who would gladly do all sorts of things to get into one (pay dues, get hazed, fundraise, censor their social media, etc).

Look, some people thrive on the structure they provide, and that’s totally legit. Not gonna knock someone for being a brother or sister. The cool ones never shove it down your throat, anyway. I’ve even worked with some Greek orgs and they’re really passionate about their shit. But it’s becoming an outdated mode of networking, and that’s regardless of anyone’s feelings on them.

Yikes to the person who listed “great parties” as a reason you’d join one… great in size, perhaps lol
