Official Discussion: A Quiet Place [SPOILERS]

It's really good. Like, upper echelons of horror good. It both takes a solid gimmick and runs with it perfectly, and yet is bold enough to not make said gimmick the focus of the movie. This movie isn't about monsters that hunt with sound, it's about a family. A family that survives a terrifying and uncertain world by relying on and trusting each other. A family that's experienced a brutal loss, and it's shaken them, but their love for each other is what's helping them keep going. The horror and tension are just bonuses to that.

Now, that's not to say the horror isn't fantastic. The entire film is dripping with tension and dread. The necessity for silence is a constant reminder that the creatures are out there. When things kick off, the creature action manages to maintain the sense of malice and dread, even when the creatures spend perhaps a bit too much time onscreen. Creature design is pretty rad, as well.

Millicent Simmonds was fantastic. This kid is acting alongside John Krasinski and Emily Blunt and is pretty much the standout performance. Between her, and Dafne Keen, and Millie Bobby Brown, it's like we're in a child actor renaissance, or something.

9/10. Go see this movie.

The only other thing I wanted to say is that my theatre was fantastic. Loudest sounds, for the majority of the movie, were popcorn bags. But there was one moment, and it was right at the start of the movie, and thank god for that, because it would have been tone-annihilating otherwise. It was when the family were gathering things in the store. Some guy in the theatre gets up to go to the bathroom or something. He's even walking gingerly. And as he gets near the door, in this room of 100 people that you could hear a pin drop in, he farts. It's really, really audible. It's hard to describe the sound of 100 people all stifling giggles for like a solid minute.
