Opinion: 'Conditions for Travellers have been difficult in the Covid-19 shutdown'

I read this with interest and found a few issues.

Notably:

Traveller families despite where they are living, have observed social distancing, but like the majority of the population, Travellers have experienced the frustration of not being in close contact with family and normal life.

There is documented proof that this has not necessarily been the case as demonstrated here and here.

From the second link:

Traveller funerals elsewhere in recent weeks have also drawn criticism, notably in Birr, Co Offaly; Bundoran, Co Donegal; New Ross, Co Wexford; and in Coolock, Dublin.

This indicates that this is not exactly a couple of isolated incidents; there is actually a clear pattern.

Add in the following display in Galway. Now, the settled community can't exactly talk in relation to protests, what with a minority of us taking part in the BLM protest in Dublin last week, but it's just further evidence of "one rule for me and another for thee". Those who participated in this protest were condemned as were those who broke the regulations in places such as Salthill in Galway and Glendalough.

I fully appreciate that there is much work to be done in relation to bridging the mistrust between the the settled and travelling communities on this island, but I think that it's important that both sides are honest brokers here and I don't feel that this piece lives up to that prerequisite for same.
