Orange is the New Black Diversity

Oh no, I totally get where she was coming from in a sense. But I don't think anyone is arguing for people to just hire any old trans (Or other minority) writer regardless of quality. I think the idea is that you should try to not only seek out good writers, but also writers who, perhaps by virtue of their own life experiences, have a better understanding and unique viewpoint on the topics being written about. This is especially important if you're planning on getting into the nitty-gritty on the more sensitive aspects of these topics, because otherwise you risk coming across as missing the point, tiptoeing around the point, or at worst becoming outright offensive in your portrayal.

I think a cis person can certainly write well about the issues a trans person experiences, as can a white person write about racism, etc. But that doesn't negate the fact that without that viewpoint, you lose something very important; you miss out on some of the nuances and emotions that come from experiencing those things first-hand yourself.
