What could Taystee have become if she were born into different circumstances?

People are already saying that her character is making them want to mentor.

As for the rest of your comment... you are the one who sounds ignorant. I grew up in the system, and most of the kids I grew up with became really shitty adults. When they make you stand up in AA/NA meetings and claim to be an addict or be punished for non-compliance, despite never having done drugs, that has an effect on kids. When you are bounced from school to school every few months, it's hard to get much of an education, and not many are motivated to educate themselves on top of everything else we have to deal with. When you carry a grocery bag of clothes from one "home" to the next, it has an effect - especially when you land in one of the more urban places where "normal" kids will rip you to shreds over your clothes. You get treated like a criminal because your parents lost custody of you. Your parents may have been abusive, addicts, or any number of things, but YOU get treated like a criminal for it.

Yeah, a LOT of kids turn wherever they can for acceptance. We were easy prey for church/cult types, and people like Vee. I chose not to do the drugs or join the cults. My little sister wasn't as strong. Neither of us escaped the system fully intact.

I won't even go into the great fortune of having been born with white skin in the USA. That was a completely random circumstance of birth that elevated me significantly, through ZERO personal effort.

Success IS 99.99999999% where you were born and under what circumstances.
