How did you turn things around when life seemed hopeless?

I began to turn things when I started thinking about other people more, and less on myself. There are all sorts of paths out there but I realized it's fundamentally a do-it-yourself job. However, I found that I didn't have to invent something new. I saw hope when I looked at people of good character with whom I grew to know and respect. Those were the models I needed to open the door.

I also read a couple of amazing books in 1973 that totally changed my perspectives for good. One was called "Seven Arrows" by H. Storm, a tale of the Plains Indians and the spiritual philosophy that carried them through their attempted extinction by the Americans. The first 81 pages changed my life. It's available on Amazon for a penny.

The other book was "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle" which is not about Zen or Motorcycles but instead about the nature of quality and values. It is a remarkable book that also gave me a lot of tools to work with. I saw there was no shame in finding ideas and examples that I could use to help me understand this crazy world. Books are great for that.

I also meditated.
