Pretty much anywhere in the USA, the public areas excluded from legal recording due to "reasonable expectation of privacy" are bedrooms (such as hotel rooms), bathrooms, changing/locker rooms, and medical examination rooms. States may have various laws that apply to other areas, but for the most part, anywhere else you can easily overhear a conversation, it's fair game to record at least video.
Video with audio is trickier, due to wiretapping laws, but generally a recording device in your hands is legally allowed to record both audio and video in public. Recording also from a device in a fixed location (such as a dashcam or security camera) may be considered wiretapping/bugging, depending on state law.
