The challenge is that it makes the lies very believable.

They'll tell a part truth about something, for example using a location people saw you at. Or a screenshot of one of four messages, that totally changes the meaning.

They will often take these stories to others confidentially, being "concerned about" you or saying "should I be worried about this behaviour" to get others believing they are genuine, and so that the story doesn't come back to you.

Over a period of 4 months I went from a friend and their bf telling me they'd had drinks with another friend and his gf, and they'd been sitting around talking about what an awesome guy I was, to being totally blocked by all four people. These were friends of nearly 5 years.
