People who know a compulsive liar, what ridiculous, obviously fake, story have they told you?

My first roommate after I moved out of my parents' house was the only full-blown compulsive liar I've ever known. He wasn't an exaggerator or a storyteller, he just couldn't fucking tell the truth about anything to anyone. Friends and family had long since gotten used to ignoring it but it was always fun to unleash him on the unsuspecting public.

Once he was showing off his new pool cue to a girl he had just started dating and her best friend but of course the mother-of-pearl inlay somehow became ivory from a prehistoric woolly mammoth. Neither of them was particularly dumb so they of course looked to me for confirmation when their minds stuttered on the plausibility of a teenage guy from a small town happening to have something like that in his possession. He didn't see my eye roll and their poker faces were impeccable. This sort of shit happened all the time.

I didn't realize how incapable he was of seeing through his own smoke show until the night he and I were sitting at a bar nursing our drinks and he started flirting with the cute girl on the other side of him. Of course he made a point of telling her he earns $40K a year, which wasn't too far off from the truth. Unfortunately he added $10K to that number with each successive drink until even she couldn't pretend not to notice any more. I still get a little sad just recalling it but to this day, I don't think he was aware of it or could help himself.
