Nah, that doesn't work. Those people lack the absolute certainty that they are fit to run the world. In my experience, those edgy make-work art shows provide outlets for pretty miserable people desperate to create and perform something but deathly afraid of failure and criticism. The projects are inscrutable and pointless enough that it isn't worth it/readily possible for the layperson to judge it on any relative merit. On the other hand, the work tends to be obviously elaborate enough and presented in such a way that all those laypeople can agree that, yep, it's definitely art, and then pick out aspects to praise à la carte. Wine gets consumed, and by the end of the night, each artist has collected dozens of "oh, it kinda reminds me of . . ." tidbits from the sorts of well meaning friends that get invited to these things, the ones who sometimes go to museums on purpose, and probably took Art History 101&2 as freshman. In the fashion of Frankenstein's monster, a grand vision is reverse engineered from these pre-approved themes/references and after some more wine the artists can talk themselves into that interpretation as being what they had been going for from the outset. The attendees get to feel flattered as perceptive and cultured while the secret hopes and dreams of the "artists" live to fight another day.
