Post-Match Thread: Zenit - Fenerbahce [EuroLeague Regular Season, Round 12]

1st half is the best half Kokoskov coached at Fener yet. Tremendous match prep being realised in good execution of defending Zenit's off-ball shooters and the relevant bread and butter offence. Then after switching on ball screens has been the main engine of Zenit's early scoring production, changing the defensive scheme to hedges and cutting that from Zenit attack too is a huge impact of in-game coaching.

Fener had that 1st half lead despite a bad Vesely performance in that half. With de Colo out, this not being a Bobby Dixon pull-up emergency scoring match and a bad Vesely, for Fener to have that kind of a lead over a team like Zenit in a half, good execution of great match prep, in-game adjustments and attacking opposing defence's weaknesses as well as a good finishing performance are necessary.

Pangos had a phenomenal attacking performance, kept Zenit in it both halves. Wasn't given much by the defence to find attacking leverage, but kept punishing slight defensive mishaps seemingly on great form with absolute confidence in his shot.

Fener is so bad at boxing out and snatching DRebs after box-outs without momentum of movement, it doesn't end up being a good decision to go small by sliding a SF to 4. This is another area where Hamilton being out of rotation does not make sense, as he's the best defensive rebounder of the team in terms of boxing-out and snatching rebounds after box-out without momentum of movement.

That and a less organised attack with lessened Kokoskov playcalling have stalled Fener's attack in the 2nd half and especially in 4th period but Vesely's gradually ramped up clutch defensive performance has been a good force in the deciding minutes.

Zenit has executed basic adjustments after the halftime well, but there wasn't much of a creative coaching input. Sometimes you need a new wrinkle and open a new area of tactical battle in the game, even though getting your players to execute the simple adjustments on the fly with a halftime talk is nothing to be underestimated and helped Zenit get back in the score.

Hamilton being out of rotation especially in matches like this where Vesely performs badly at least for an entire half is not only inexplicable because if Hamilton doesn't play subpar, it'd bring additive value to the team. But also because Kokoskov doesn't have the luxury of playing Vesely 30+ minutes when he plays bad for long stretches with his messed up knees and he's on the wrong side of 30 now. We need to preserve Vesely. And preserve him to get the best possible version of him post-knee surgery.

I'm inclined to say Pangos is MOTM honestly, despite how much Fener attack benefited from his horrible post defence. I'm might impressed by his form.
