Magic Cylinder is bad because you lose a card and your opponent loses none. This is called a -1 in card advantage. There's no point in dealing 2000 damage to your opponent but leaving their monsters there to attack you next turn. You will always be better off using trap cards which remove your opponent's monsters or which stop them from making a play in the first place.

Let's take a look at the most played trap cards at the moment:

Vanity's Emptiness

"Neither player can Special Summon monsters. When a card is sent from the Deck or the field to your Graveyard: Destroy this card."

How people use this card is to summon their monsters, then set this. Once their opponent starts trying to get their monsters out, they activate this, and suddenly the opponent is screwed because they can do nothing to defend themselves.

Solemn Warning

"When a monster(s) would be Summoned, OR when a Spell Card, Trap Card, or monster effect is activated that includes an effect that Special Summons a monster(s): Pay 2000 LP; negate the Summon or activation, and if you do, destroy that card."

Stops your opponent from getting their monsters out, simple.

Compulsory Evacuation Device

"Target 1 monster on the field; return that target to the hand."

Gets rid of your opponent's monster. Interrupt their play on their turn or on your turn clear their monster to attack them directly and finish them off.

Bottomless Trap Hole

"When your opponent Summons a monster(s) with 1500 or more ATK: Destroy that monster(s) with 1500 or more ATK, and if you do, banish it."

Very simple, seeing a trend here?

Torrential Tribute

"When a monster(s) is Summoned: Destroy all monsters on the field."

Technically speaking this actually isn't being played much right now because it's not much good against the best decks. But for the longest time it's been a staple trap in every deck, and probably will be again a year from now. It's doing the same job as the last three. Your opponent summons three monsters, you flip this and you go +2 card advantage and stop their play.

Breakthrough Skill

"Target 1 face-up Effect Monster your opponent controls; negate the effects of that opponent's face-up monster, until the end of this turn. During your turn, except the turn this card was sent to the Graveyard: You can banish this card from your Graveyard, then target 1 face-up Effect Monster your opponent controls; negate that target's effects until the end of this turn."

People need their monster effects, this stops them, and makes it very easy for you to deal with their field with your other cards.

Less popular traps at the moment which have been staples in the past:

Dimensional Prison

"When an opponent's monster declares an attack: Target that attacking monster; banish that target."

Removes monsters...

Mirror Force

"When an opponent's monster declares an attack: Destroy all Attack Position monsters your opponent controls."

Removes monsters...

Do you see what I mean?
