Reddit, what made you realize you were poor growing up?

I wouldn't say that I was poor, I was always taught and grew up with the motto its always worse somewhere else. But I realized how little I had compared to other kids in school, the handy downs or "bobo" no named brand shoes that kids would point at and laugh. I got crap in school for stitches in my clothes, I learned how to sew my clothing and buttons on my pants and I still do it today. The only difference now, is people are amazed I know how to sew, I am amazed they never learned lol it takes 5-10mins to sew a button onto a shirt or shorts I payed $5 for at walmart. That's $5 I saved. I still only get a haircut once a year but that's by choice, I can make myself look good with long or short hair. I learned how to shave with a DE safety razor when i was 16 because they are so much cheaper and better than today's razors. Cool thing is that I made a lot of friends who were either in the same boat or worse than me and they were and are amazing people. I'm 26 now and am married, I have nice clothes for dates with the wife and such. but I won't wear them to work I value them to much. Instead of getting laughed at, I laugh at people wearing $200 shoes to a warehouse because they are going to get messed up within a year. I remember seeing kids fight in school because somebody stepped on their jordens. So stupid, I am glad to be done with school.
