Redditors who have known a murderer or sex offender, what were they like?

One of my close friends from high school is currently in jail for murder.

He, his brother, and his brother's girlfriend, and one other friend went to an older man's house (a known drug dealer). The girlfriend had the idea to show up at man's place on her own, with the other two waiting outside, trick him into thinking he was going to get sex for drugs, then sneak away and let the other guys in. Well... they tried to sneak in, the man noticed and a fight in the kitchen ensued, my friends brother stabbed the guy in the neck, skull, chest, hands, BUT he also managed to stab back.. ultimately they killed each other.

How were they, my friend was a good kid. Kind hearted, but he let his addiction to being high get the better of him. He was willing to participate in this to get his hands on weed. His brother and him smoked literally every day, multiple times a day. He wasn't always like this, he got worse after he got dumped by his long time girlfriend, which resulted in a depression that made him drop out of college. I though he was smart, we always got along. Star athlete, but not conceited. Funny and charming.

His brother on the other hand, the actual murderer, I never liked him. He was always brash and arrogant. He loved to argue and fight and he was also a star athlete but he was not humble. I am honestly not surprised. He was not as smart as my friend, he was getting high in high school, I think despite being younger, he was the bad influence on my friend.

When I heard the news I couldn't believe it. I always had high hopes for him. It still breaks my heart to know where he is. I catch myself looking up his mug shot once in a while, and I still can't understand how someone I thought was a great person could end up like that. He looks completely different, his eyes, his face... he's lost.

This is my go to story when people say there is nothing wrong with marijuana. Yeah, I know it's not addicting on its own. I know its got less health risks than cigarettes. But he did get addicted to the way it made him feel, it made him calm chill, and not worry about the failure he had become. So much he resorted to crime to keep feeding that feeling. So much he resorted to murder to keep feeding that feeling.
