Had a conversation with someone who had student loan debt and is a staunch Republican. They not only are ADAMANTLY and VOCALLY against student loan forgiveness that Biden proposed, they also admitted in the same breath that they submitted their forgiveness application and received the message that it had been received… I’ve had conversations with people who receive government assistance who hate people who receive the same assistance; or those who had children who receive Medicaid but call me a “Commie” when I mention a Medicare for all system. I truly find myself at a loss for words at these moments. My grandparents starved during the Great Depression and one set of grandparents picked cotton so that they would have money for food and clothes; they did not think that I should have to starve or pick cotton because that’s what they endured. Being a parent, mentor or human is to understand what it’s like to struggle and want better for others, and make it better for others; not because they’ll be grateful, but because it helps everyone in the end and it’s the right thing to do.
