US Residents of Reddit: What is a lesser known fact about the state you live in?

Grew up in California:

  • If California's registered Republicans all formed their own state, they'd rank 20th in population

  • Los Angeles used to be a big oil town in the early 1900s, and still is pretty rich in oil

Live in Alabama:

  • Space is a major industry for us, and the Saturn V rocket was developed here, among other space technologies. In fact you'll see cotton fields sharing space with tech-related defense contractors and biotech companies at research park in Huntsville

  • The population is actually incredibly diverse, and racism is not really a factor in everyday life.

  • This is more of a subjective response than a fact, but I find it quite beautiful here, it may not have the tall mountains of California, but it's got its own unique scenery from forests, to swamps, to white sandy beaches.
